What Level 4 Autonomy Really Means

The Society of Automotive Engineers defines Level 4 as “high driving automation” where the vehicle can perform all driving functions under specific conditions without any human intervention. Unlike Level 3 systems, which require the driver to be ready to take over at any time, a Level 4 vehicle can handle all contingencies within its operational design domain, including pulling over safely if it encounters a situation it cannot handle.
